Are Prisons Obsolete book review

By Jourdan Ferguson: Opinion Editor

In Angela Davis’ book Are Prisons Obsolete, Davis discusses the integration of prison into society as the main means of punishment. She discusses how the penitentiary strayed from reformation and became the punishment industry. Davis points out the contrast between men and women prisons which is highly symbolic of larger issues at hand. In this compelling work, she evaluates the chain of events that has resulted from the industrialization of prisons and how this has served to reinforce the concept of prisons as a normal aspect of society.
